With Valentine's Day right around the corner, I've been getting the stuff together for Matthew's teachers. They turned out so cute, so I thought I would share incase anyone was wondering what they could do for the teachers that have such a great impact on their kids.

Getting crafty...

...well, just a little! My friend Wanda is really the crafty one, but I am trying my best to have a touch of cuteness for Sam's shower. I settled on a theme of clouds and rainbows and soon found out there isn't a lot out there, but I have been copying most ideas I do find. Wanda gave me the idea of doing sour cream containers. Okay, first I thought it would be something way too hard for someone with as little talent as I have and then what in the world would I put in them. Come to find out they are beyond simple to make and I came up with the cutest idea for the inside!

After making several just to get the hang of it, I learned a few things that may help you out:

1. Instead of using Sticky Strip, just use double-sided tape.

2. You don't have to use a crimper if you don't have one (the tape will keep it together).

3. Any size can be made by adding 1.25 inches for the length.

Wouldn't this be a stinkin' cute idea for classroom treats. In the above examples I made, I put all kinds of stuff in them. Peppermint Patties for St. Patrick's Day; lip gloss, erasers, fingernail stickers, etc. for Valentine's Day. But I just love what I came up with for my clouds and rainbows party. I used cloud paper for the outside, stuffed with a snack sized Snickers bar and added a tag that says, "Don't snicker. It could have been you." (As in, you could have been the one preggers at our stage in life...LOL!)

You could use this for just about anything... Don't snicker, but would you be my Valentine? Snicker all you want, but we are going to rock the CRCT! Don't snicker: I'm the one with a treat! How cute would one be filled with Hershey's kisses saying, "Sending my Valentine lots of kisses!"

I'm now working on an idea for Matthew's teachers for Valentine's day... I was thinking of something along the lines of "One of the joys of teaching, hugs and kisses" (Almond Joy, Hershey's kisses and a Little Hug fruit drink) or "Wishing you a Happy Valentine's Day with a Coke and a smile, with a side of hugs and kisses" (Coke, Hershey's kisses and a Little Hug fruit drink). Which sounds cuter?

ME, that's who! I would tell you the whole story, but who really cares? Trace said he needed a picture (most likely as payback for a camera being shoved in his face every day). So, here you go babe. All this really proves is that I shouldn't be in the kitchen... it's not safe (seeing how I almost set off the smoke detectors). But, my pancakes were off the chain (Watkins vanilla and a little sugar is the trick).

I have an ongoing Honey-Do list (what wife doesn't, right?)... Well, one of my pet peeves is hangers all over the counter in the laundry room. I guess another pet peeve would be piles of clothes all over the place. Granted I don't have a clothesline and only 1 child, but seems I do laundry every single day. As soon as the dryer goes off, the clothes come out, on to hangers and to the closet (especially since I still don't have bedroom furniture after 10 years in this house). So, that is why there is always hangers everywhere in there... I decided to do something about it yesterday and bought a dowel rod. I wanted Trace to hang it under the cabinet for the hangers. He looked at me like I was crazy and told me that would be mighty tacky (as if we live in a mansion with a butler and maids). Then he suggested getting a towel rod. Guess what he came home with today AND put up?

Yes, that is a basket in the sink. Okay, so I don't put EVERYTHING right up. Socks and undies go right there until needed (or until they get folded every couple months). Geesh, did you really think I was that good? Didn't you just read that I burn microwave bacon!

A couple of funnies...

As the news was playing (and me ignoring it), Trace asked if I felt the earthquake today. Huh? While I was still trying to figure out what he was talking about Matthew said, "Well, I did have a little gas in PE today and bumped into the bleachers, but that was about it." Good gracious.

When I told the hubby about the other projects I had for him to do he told me to "stay off Pinterest"!

Lastly, he told me he found out how to make money off Facebook. Oh yes, I could be the next millionaire. I know you want to know the secret too! Go ahead and admit it! So he continues, "Go to account settings. Click deactivate account. Then go your a$$ to work." Yes, I do believe he read that somewhere else.

is my son's screen name, so you know he loves some tacos. I saw this on Pinterest, and thought I would give it a try.

Let me just tell you how easy this was! Gosh, it may even beat hitting a drive-thru! LOL!

Taco Bites

Wonton wrappers (I used Phyllo Pastry Sheets)
1 lb. ground beef browned
1 pkg. taco seasoning
Toppings
{Cheese, Tomatoes, Lettuce, Sour, Sour Cream}

Brown your hamburger like you normally would. I held back a good portion of the meat because I will make spaghetti tomorrow night. My friend Tara thinks it's so funny, but it works just right for our little family of three.

Spray cupcake pan to keep the wraps from sticking.

I used Phyllo strips to make "cups" and added taco meat that had been seasoned and drained.

Topped with cheese, minis are ready for the oven. Eight minutes at 425 should do the trick. If not as toasted as you like, add another minute or two.

Once out of the oven, spoon cups onto a serving tray. Each person can add the desired toppings for their mini taco.

They were delish!

He decided one day last week to work on the firing range, so he got up and went to get the wood. Once back he and Matthew got started working.

I haven't been the wife or mother I needed to be over the last month or so. I have been ill and short-tempered. Tired and moody. Hateful and mean. I have no idea what has come over me, but I can feel it creeping in all around me all the time. I really shouldn't say I don't know because I do know. It is pure and simple Satin's way of destroying the Light in our marriage. I need to use Catherine's words to Caleb in hopes of expressing how I feel about my husband and what I am committed to.

"If I haven't told you that you are a GOOD man, you are. If I haven't asked for your FORGIVENESS, I am. If I haven't told you that I LOVE you, I do."

Once I find who I loaded my book to, I'm going to start on fireproofing my love for you. On second thought, I am going to simply buy another book so that I can start now on getting our marriage back to where it has always been. I am sorry for being so contrary over the last few days, weeks and months.

wonderful time of the year! I do love Christmas, but I’m not one of those that decorate fanatically. I’m good to get a tree and stockings up. Some years I even go all out with a manger scene, snowmen and table trees (but not often).

Trace pulled everything down out of the attic Friday and doctored the lights. Then yesterday I started decorating. It takes me awhile because I am not one of those people that has “the eye” for such things. But, I think it turned out quite nicely even though I had 3 containers of ornaments left over. Go figure.
This is the third year we’ve had a color themed tree. Before we used the tree I bought the summer before we married and ornaments that were collected along the way. We also started collecting Hallmark ornaments the year Matthew was born. We would buy two, one for our tree and one to save for when Matthew gets married. Then someone told me how cheesy it was, almost causing me to stop. I’m glad I didn’t listen. Of course now Matthew picks them out and puts one on his tree and we store the other. I kept a few of the more sentimental ornaments that matched our new tree.
I always thought you had to spend big money to get a really pretty tree. Not the case! Most of mine were extremely cheap, but look great just the same.

Trace was very skeptical when I purchased a couple HUGE ornaments, but they have become some of our favorites!

I hope everyone takes a moment to remember the reason we actually have a Christmas season. When making memories this holiday season, start a tradition of you sharing the story of Jesus’ birth, the Magi, the star, King Herod, all of it.

I was so excited to receive my stocking stuffer today in the mail…

I saw the most beautiful pendant on my dear friend Sallie’s Facebook page. I was so excited to discover she makes custom jewelry!

I ordered (ummm…I mean Santa made) a Tree of Life pendant. Sallie designs one of a kind pieces that are certain to become family heirlooms. She used our birthstones and anniversary (my birthday and anniversary happen to be in the same month) to construct my pendant.

The pictures do not do Sallie’s masterpiece justice. It is not only unique but a work of art that I will forever treasure.

I hope Santa doesn’t make me wait for this little treat! I can’t imagine any mother, bride, grandmother, gIrL who would not simply love this little nugget!!! Your very on unique piece is waiting on you to contact Sallie!

On top of that special surprise, the head honcho from White Pines Meals on Wheels delivered us dinner tonight. How super sweet was it of Tara to bring us tacos (with all the trimmings)? Tacos you ask… Tara decided on the menu based on the fact of it being Matthew’s favorite food. In my book, doing something sweet makes you a friend; but doing something this thoughtful makes you a friend for life! Sweet Susan N. rounded out the meal with brownies. Let me just tell you the brownies were still warm. Anyone who knows me knows what that means…yep, I had brownies first!

Wanting to be certain I had the right words, I have been waiting to write this post. The longer I waited the more certain I became that there are no right words. I can only share what is on my mind and in my heart. So here goes…

Jane Maund Mobley was more than a sister-in-law to me, she was a sister and a friend. Losing someone is never easy, but a loss so sudden and tragic only adds to the devastation. Saying goodbye to Jane has left all that knew her broken.

During the funeral service Keith Dixon made a statement that I’ve tucked away in my heart. He said that when people see March 29, 1970 - Nov 15, 2011 they will see when Jane was born and when she died. However, friends and family will see the dash. The dash signifying Jane’s life. The path her journey took her on. How she loved, what she stood for and how she lived. Even though her journey was cut short, Jane truly lived. She loved her family and shared some funny stories each time you spoke (most often about the girls). She stood for what was right, not what was easy. She lived each day with a song in her heart and a smile on her face. She always found the good in any situation. Jane was many things to many people, but one thing she was to everyone was kind. She leaves behind what she treasured most, a loving husband and two beautiful daughters. There was never a time when she wasn’t thinking of others. She was dreaming of a coastal life but thanking God for all she had in the here and now.

So I live in the middle of nowhere…well not nowhere, but a small town were nothing ever happens. Let me just say I am grateful to live at the corner of the sticks and boondocks. This place where nothing ever happens sure is a place of great people. It’s a place where people will stand in line for over two hours just to have a minute to tell you how sorry they are. A second to say I’m here for you. A moment to hug your neck. A chance to ask what can be done. An opportunity to cry with you or wipe your tears. A look back with a story of some funny times. A heartfelt memory of how Jane touched their lives. It’s a place people will drive over two hours for a funeral and then wait in line for three more just to show you they care. It’s a place with words of encouragement, hot dishes, sweet treats, phone calls, emails, nightly visits and most importantly prayers. A place grown men are not ashamed of crying. A place where a friend will bring you tacos because she knows they are your child’s favorite. A place with voices of angels. It’s a place I gladly call home.

Even though Jane isn’t physically here any longer, she will always be apart of our lives. Simply because she lived life to the fullest, leaving us with memories to treasure. When she left Tuesday morning she could not have imagined it would be the last time she would kiss Wayne. The last time she would hug the girls. The last time she would pet Pepe. The last time she would clean off the bathroom sink. The last time to look around the new kitchen of which she was so proud and lock the back door. No, she did not know there would be no tomorrow.

As I’ve gained weight I’ve noticed that I have taken a step back. A step back from those I love and things I enjoy. I let Tracy go alone to places and events. I leave Matthew to entertain himself and stopped playing with him as much. Plain and simple, I am just embarrassed. The hole in my heart has made me reevaluate a lot of my decisions. I am not promised a tomorrow, so I better stop letting today pass me by!

We are none promised a tomorrow. So what will we do with our today. I for one have already made changes in my life. I’ve stopped depending on “I love you” to be enough for Tracy and Matthew. I get up out of the chair and go with them. Even though I have to hold him down, I sprinkle Matthew with kisses and shower him with hugs. I’ve left my phone on the charger and cut that string. I know our financial future is important, but I’ve stopped worrying about it so much. I am going to get the things we want and actually enjoy what our hard work has been about. I am going to tell my family what they mean to me. I am going to be certain my friends realize how important they are in my life. I am going to make memories. I am going to treasure the mess. I am going to hold them tight. I am going to turn off the television. I am going to share my faith. I am going to stop making excuses. I am going to be the wife I haven’t. I’m going to be the mother I was intended. I’m going to forgive. I’m going to be the type of friend I want to have. I’m going to treasure today so I won’t have regrets if tomorrow never comes. I’m going to be thankful. I’m going to sing along. I’m going to smile. To borrow the words of Tim, I’m going to live like I were dyin'.

You are not promised a tomorrow either. So, shut down your computer. Find your children and hold them close. Stop your husband and give him the kind of kiss you did when you first started dating. Call your mom and tell her thank you for making you the person you are today. Write your best friend a letter telling her thanks for listening to all your whining. Visit your bothers and sisters and tell them how grateful you are that they are your family. Get from behind the camera and be apart of the snap. Stop planning and live. Thank God for your blessings. Stop complaining about what you don’t have and praise the Good Lord for giving you so much. Go now… time is a luxury not a right.

I discovered Keurig, single cup coffee makers this week while at a media meeting. Being able to brew a wide variety of gourmet coffee, tea and hot cocoa one cup at a time in under 60 seconds was just the type of gadget Trace would like. With plans for Christmas, I purchased one from Wal-Mart. However, Matthew had other ideas. He said we couldn’t wait that long to try it out. I wouldn’t let him unbox it until Trace got home (just incase he didn’t like it), but he did unpacked all the k-cups and placed them in the carousel. By the time Trace got home, excitement was seeping out of Matthew’s pores! LOL! Needless to say, by this point it wasn’t going back no matter what. I came to find out it was already on Trace’s Christmas list, so score one for me! Matthew has been using it non-stop and thankfully it was a big hit! I must admit watching my child drink coffee is just a little too fun-nay!

Trace finally squeezed in a few hours to go hunting this afternoon. I certainly hope he has a little good luck, because our freezer is getting mighty empty!

Sadness

has settled over the Sands household as we had to say goodbye to Riley. Pets bring hours of joy and entertainment. They provide companionship and unconditional love. They bring so much happiness to our lives, but saying goodbye is always so difficult. Matthew and I still talk about the day we picked Riley up and how stinkin’ cute he was.

Riley was a frisky little dog with endless energy! He loved to chase rabbits and make a mess. We could count on him to be rocking while he waited for us to come home. He expected to be petted whenever someone when in or out of the house. He cleaned up all the leftovers and never quite knew what to think of the pool. He would go a little crazy when let out in the mornings and HaTeD getting a bath. He was a wonderful pet and will forever be missed. Riley was a part of our family and we learned a lot from him…

Thirty nine years, 11 months, 30 days… you can round it off to 40. FORTY YEARS. Fourteen thousand six hundred ten days. How did I make my way along this path known to many as life? The days that have marked the sum of my life will bear witness to me being carried, dragged, pushed, pulled, idling, leading; but often, just running… Running through life while memories are forged; memories of success, missed opportunities, failure, regrets, loss, pain, accomplishments and relationships. Love and growth. Growth and love. Some 21,038,400 minutes of moving forward…toward? What? Fame? Wealth? Something. Yes, forty years have taught me much more than I can share here in this space and time.

I’ve learned that Daddy will always try to fix any problem his little girl has…Band-Aids have as much healing ability as a doctor, white carpet is not a good idea, baby boys want their Mama, teenage boys are bipolar, Matthew’s reflection can be seen in my mirror, not all pretty girls are nice, not all lies are selfish, fat is a barrier, my pain makes Tracy cry, my disappointment focuses Matthew, can survive not sleeping on the left, my mouth says things that my heart would never signoff on, some people will help, people are going to talk, true acceptance is never asked for, tragedies will leave you broken, love allows you to see colors, devotion isn’t always reciprocated, strength can come from weakness, white can be worn after Labor Day, I am not always right, it’s hard to apologize, my heart is made of egg shells, my ego needs a bodyguard, reading is essential as air, evil exist, people won’t always do the right thing, power can change a person, true love does exist, my father is a King, I have an abundance of acquaintances, a few true-blue friends, God does not like ugly, I should apologize, some people want you to fail, a few will fight for you, blood doesn’t mean family, unrelated people can be family, time moves faster after becoming a parent, parenthood is more than a blessing, God will be merciful, people can surprise you, hard work doesn’t guarantee an outcome, tears help cleanse the soul, hatred takes away your decision, I will only be tall on the kindergarten hall, hatefulness can come with a ribbon, sons are an inheritance from God, self-esteem is never going to be great, each family member should have a remote, blessings are to be treasured and celebrated, greed is a hard burden to shoulder, sympathy is not compassion, taking action is a true measure, forgiving is a process, love can hurt, anger robs you of happiness, marriage is more than sharing a name, I will make mistakes, standing up for yourself isn’t disrespect, and even when they don’t follow, lead by example.

Some of life’s lessons have cost more than I care to admit; some financial, others blood, sweat and tears. When discussing birthday goodies, which have always shower down on me, I realized I need nothing. Not one single thing. I have the man I will grow old with; the son that will turn my hair gray, God has provided me 40 years worth of memories to celebrate. I am thankful for the time and space to live my life. Since my cup is full, I want to pass the pitcher. I want to stop feeling sympathetic and show compassion. I want to let my light shine… Normally you wouldn’t be able to see my shining light because it is meant only for my Father. I want my friends and family’s lights to shine even brighter by making a donation to Team Brandon instead of giving me more stuff. I know you love me, even without something shinny tied in a perfect bow. Together we can give hope. I’m not sure about you, but sounds like a pretty dang good way to spend my 14610th day.

As I go to get Matthew up yesterday morning I had to do a double-take. Lying on the couch was a lamp. Yes a lamp. This particular lamp belongs on Matthew’s bedside table.

When I asked him why his lamp was on the couch, he had to go look for himself. Sometime during the night he got up, took all the hats off the top, unplugged it, picked it up, walked to the living room and placed it on the couch. Of course, he had no memory of doing any of those things.

Sleepwalkers… gotta love them and deadbolt the doors!

Of all the things I’ve learned, the most important is knowing our past, present and future was destined from our Lord Jesus. God’s knot helps us to stay true to our love, to depend on each other and grow closer in the people God expects us to be.

In our life together, I’ve learned countless things about you. As I look towards our next 18 years, I certainly hope I discover even more about the great man I share my life with. I treasure the sunshine and the rain. Through our rain, I am able to appreciate our sunshine. Plus, I’ve learned you will always have an umbrella for me!

As you know, I love pictures! The good, the bad and the ugly (just as long as I’m not actually in them ~ {giggle}). As of late, I haven’t been scrapping many of them.

If it wasn’t for Matthew and Trace helping me get the Picture of the Day {POTD}, I would have a complete and utter mess! Vā’kā: Cades Cove Tour

As we entered the flat valley of Cades Cove, Psalm 46:10 was all I could think of:

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

We love to visit the Great Smokey Mountains, but this particular cove is one of the most inspiring natural treasures that I have ever had the joy of seeing. This was my first trip and one I’m not likely to forget!

An 11-mile, one way loop road takes you back in time to see how for hundreds of years people lived in this majestic cove. There are 17 stops along the loop road where you can stop and visit, or just drive through and enjoy the scenery and wildlife.

Okay, so I KNOW I am not cutout to have lived in the 1800s, but I do honestly believe that being surrounded by such beauty could offset the hardships of no running water, electricity, air conditioning, Internet, DVR, Kindles… (okay almost, but definitely I could have done without phones).

Alrighty, so the park ranger suggested walking would be a wonderful way to enjoy all the pleasures of Cades Cove, but as you probably guessed, that was a no-go for Melissa Sands. Nor the bicycle option (come on now, who in their right mind would want to ride a bicycle in the mountains, especially when they have to put up such signs).

The Methodist Church was built for $115 in 115 days in 1902. So, that was some mighty fine carpentry work; especially when you consider our house took over 150 days to build with all of today’s machinery (with a little research I also found out $1250.00 in the year 2010 has the same "purchase power" as $115 in the year 1920). It was truly amazing to realize that there were four churches (Primitive Baptist, Methodist, Hopewell Methodist, and Missionary Baptist) in such a small community; mainly because of being expelled from one church or differing of opinions on the Civil War.

Can you see Trace as a preacher as opposed to law enforcement?

Maybe one reason we are so drawn to this particular area is because we had family that once lived here. All right, not really (that we know of ), but it was surprising to see both our names in the cemetery outside the church. Just one more reason I know our souls have always been together… okay, cheese I know!

We were amazed at the sheer number of people stopping to stare and gaulk at the deer (you know being from South Georgia, this is most amazing during a “certain” season when the freezer is almost empty)…

Where as, this caused most of my staring and gaulking…

Elijah Oliver, son of one of the oldest families of Caves Cove, had a “stranger room” added to the front porch for overnight visitors to stay. I can’t even imagine that, seeing how I won’t even open the door for the UPS man! None-the-less, that was a pretty cool concept. Many other buildings were on the site as well (springhouse, smokehouse, corn crib, barns, etc.).

The mill area was one spot we did have to get out and walk around. Sure glad we did! The grist mill was totally cool (picture provided from Trace’s cell phone, since I forgot my camera in the car), because they were actually still making corn mill. Among the other buildings that had been moved to the complex from other parts of the park, there were park rangers giving demonstrations for children on various things (however, our own kid remained in the car – after all, he is him mama’s son).

Dan Lawson’s place was built in 1856 on the land purchased from his father-in-law. It is amazing how houses were built out of logs because sawmills were too far away to be feasible (I didn’t even realize sawmills were around in the 1800s). Then again, there was a sawmill on Little House on the Prairie, which was set in the late 1800's. After a little research (what can I say, I am a media specialist after all) I discovered sawmills have been around since the 3rd century AD. Who knew?

So, obviously, there were several other stops along the loop road; but, my camera didn’t seem to be at the ready each time. This was definitely the highlight of our vacation for me and I can’t wait to go back. I don’t think this part of the park will ever get old for me!

Vā’kā: Clingmans Dome

Tracy was in the driver’s seat the whole vacation, planning everything! Somehow he even managed perfect days; 76°weather with short mid-day showers, absolutely fresh, clean air and both days and nights were totally, completely, utterly free of creepy crawlies (bugs, insects or other South Georgia pests). He even worked surrounding area attractions into his loose agenda for the week. I was seeing the “Man of the Year” award nominations in his future!

Thursday he had us visiting Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, 6,643 feet above sea level. Tracy thought we would love the spectacular 360° view of the Smokies the brochures raved about. After finishing a morning of sightseeing, since we were so close (just 15 miles away), we decided we would check it out.

Those close 15 miles, turned out to be well over an hour of driving and a great deal of OMG-ing. As seen in my previous post, mountain roads can be a slight bit nerve-racking. When I say nerve-racking, I am referring to the tension of the passengers; where as the driver is having to pay attention to the winding roads, idiots that should never have been given a driver’s license (or allowed to procreate for that matter), the extremely irritating co-pilot yelling, “OMGbecarefulOMGtheyareslowingdownistheroadreallygoingtoOMGnotsoclosetotheedge”, the intensely distressing comments by said co-pilot of not being so sure anymore; all the while continually answering the irritating question, “Are we there yet?”!

Tracy hops out as soon as we claim a parking space (no doubt trying to get a few seconds peace), only to hop right back in with a slow grin. He asks if Matthew and I still keep a jacket in the car (which we do at all times). Undoubtedly there was a sweet, but confused, look on my face. (I’m sure you have no problem believing the sweet part). As he points to the mirror displaying the temperature, I was quiet; yes, quiet. I just didn’t understand what I was seeing.

As Trace hurriedly tells me it’s not so bad with a jacket, a dude walks by (never missing a beat) and says, “Well, not until you get to the top. It’s a good 15°cooler up there.” Okay, it was COLD with the wind blowing; but, I was determined not to make things worse by complaining (mostly because I had just used up a month’s worth on that dang dome road). Deep breath. Just going to have to suck it up and not let a little (or a lot) of coldness taint Trace’s plans for the day. So, after a pop (or two) and the evil eye, Matthew seemed to get on board (or maybe it was the threat of losing the go-cart park if he didn’t cut the attitude and let his Daddy enjoy the experience ~ because I certainly had been – NOT!).

Alright, all bundled up. Well, as bundled as you can be with flip flops, shorts, t-shirt and a thin jean jacket. Matthew says, “When people ask what I did today, I’m going to tell them I kissed a cloud.”

Okay, so it really was beautiful and super cool to actually be walking through the clouds! Like I said, “Man of the Year” material. I am basically dragging myself up the “little” hill to the Visitor’s Center, as I start wondering (out loud apparently) were the chair lifts or trolleys were (because I really could not see them anywhere). Trace (with that same slow grin) says that he doesn’t think there are any, that we are going to walk up there. “What? What did you just say? Walk? I am dying just from the car to (almost about to make) the Visitor’s Center.

After a few minutes of encouragement from both guys; I must have still been looking sweet, with a hint of doubtful. Because my (mostly) sweet baby boy says, “Mama, you can just sit in the car and wait on us. We don’t mind.” See, mostly sweet. I assure him that I will be fine; I just needed a minute. I moved past looks and told Trace I just didn’t think I could do it, not knowing Mr. Ears was listening. Now he was starting to get concerned with my sweet, but something-more-is-going-on-here look; so he offered to go back to the car with me. Okay, that sounded good to my body. However, my head had to make an appearance (grrrrr). I knew that if I didn’t go, Trace wouldn’t go either. I knew he really wanted to go up for the spectacular mountain view. Grrrr (again). “No, let’s go. I think I’ll be fine. We will just have to take it slow.”

Trace is pumped, ready to go and explaining that it wasn’t far and was a only a gradual climb.

To get to the summit I knew I was going to have to take the trail (not a chair lift or even a stink’in golf cart), so I best slap on a smile and get with it! When I say I thought I was going to die, I am not exaggerating (not much anyway). I literally had to stop at each and every bench in attempts to catch my breathe. Even though the trail is paved, it is outrageously steep! As in, straight up!

All those on the way down from their religious experience would offer up the same words of encouragement, “Almost there!” As I was explaining quietly to Trace (mostly because I couldn’t breathe) that I really didn’t think I could make it any further; Matthew comes over to offer to sit with me so I wouldn’t be left alone (see, almost). They keep me motivated and help me to the next bench as 4 or 5 teenagers run past us up the mountain (I do believe I could have slapped one of them and not even felt a little bit of shame).

By way of the next bench, we finally made it to the dome.

Once you survive the road to get to the park, pull yourself up the maintain to get to the dome, don’t even bother looking for an elevator. Oh no sister, you will be climbing another 54 feet to the observation tower hanging off the top of the mountain. I concentrated on putting on foot in front of the other. Then I would start all over again. At some point Trace and Matthew realized I wasn’t walking beside them any longer (most likely because my OMG-ing had stopped). As they came back to see what I was staring down at, they would look from me to my feet. Apparently they realized there wasn’t anything really there and I was on the very verge of tears (well dang, I thought I was doing a good job hiding that little fact).

I was paralyzed with fear. I literally was frozen in place and was not capable of moving. Matthew certainly does love him Mama! He rubbed my back, talked to me softly, offered suggestions, telling me over and over again that it would be okay. They both wanted us to turn around and just go back down (BEFORE I had a full out panic attack). OMG! Those two boys of mine have hearts of gold. But, I couldn’t do that to them when we were mere feet from the summit.

The kids at the top (yeah, that would be the group that sprinted right past me) were yelling down the mountain, “I love Jesus! Yes I do! I love Jesus, how about you?” Part of their group returned the chant from the bottom of the tower. “Yes, I love Jesus! Yes I do! I love Jesus, how about you?” I swear that is when God walked up beside me and Jesus took my hand (okay, so he looked like Matthew, but I know Jesus was there inside him). I can not even begin to describe the concern and love in those eyes. As Oprah says, it really was an “Aha! moment”!

Using Jesus’ power, grace and mercy, that little boy of mine guided me over to a bench (because I still couldn’t look up, even after making it to the very top). I was totally exhausted and stiff with fear! I couldn’t look out at the view; I had to close my eyes or focus on my feet. Matthew didn’t want to leave my side. I encouraged him to go. Reluctantly he let go of my hand and went to stand by his Daddy. But, I tell you the honest truth…as I sat there in the heavens, I could most certainly feel the hand of God. Matthew and Tracy must have too, because they came back over to tell me about everything they were seeing and feeling. Matthew tried to get me to just stand up and look (not go over to the edge), but I simply couldn’t. They start showing me through the camera…Bless them!

I can’t tell you where the fear came from. Not.A.Clue! It has happened only once before when climbing the lighthouse on Sapelo Island (that is a whole other story). But, I can tell you that I Could.NOT!Move!

Through Matthew, God was able to break my irrational thought patterns to get me moving again. After taking the pictures of what I know had to be a mesmerizing experience the guys got me back up and moving down the side of the mountain.

Surprisingly enough, going down was almost as hard as the struggle up. You had to take slow, steady steps, because any amount of speed could end with a roll down the mountain. I was having so much trouble with how fast I was gaining speed, I was beginning to get really scared that my flip flops would send me to my death (okay, so maybe only sending me to my knees, butt or for a roll). Anyway, the sickening feel of panic had my eyes watering again. And again, Matthew comes over to save his mama. Slipping his arm around me, he tells me “to lean on him” and he would be my “living walking stick.”

As we neared the parking lot, I braved a picture and a quick peek of the mountain view.

As Tracy is getting everything back together, Matthew wants his picture “on” the mountain.

As we are making our way back to the car, Matthew wants to know if I’m okay, with true concern in his eyes. Still stifling a tear, I said, “No. I think I was so scared I wet myself.” With that, he busted out laughing! “Mama! You didn’t pee your pants! You sat on a wet bench on the way down.” Guess with my fear of falling coupled with a need to breathe, a wet bench didn’t register (that is until I thought it was pee)!

Looking back at my panic attack that day, I’m thinking no nomination will be coming forth…

There is something about being in the mountains that really make us feel closer to God. I’m sure this feeling comes from a combination of many things… being so high up, the absolute beauty of the environment, air that is so clean and fresh…

However, road signs can also make you feel closer to God. Yes, road signs; as in, praying I make it around this curve!

Watching the GPS was also a form of entertainment. Some roads were so curvy and wild that the GPS couldn’t even establish if we were actually on a road at all…

Then some of the signs were just hilarious!

The accident investigation sign had us rolling! You would see the sign, but no where to pull over for a mile or so. I’m guessing if there was an accident, you wouldn’t actually need the “site” anyway. Scair-ree!

Yes, that is a knife store and a go-kart park. Smoky Mountain Knife Works in Pigeon Forge is one of his favorite stores! He had been saving his money and had his wish list printed. As soon as we checked in at the hotel, he was ready to go!

Fatherhood...

True to nature, being born meant a man had given me life. A man that held me close when I cried. Feed me when I was hungry. Changed me when needed. And loved me. As a baby, I knew not what any of this meant. As a toddler I looked up to this man that was my whole world. As I grew, my understanding of this man became clear. He was called Daddy. As a child he simply could do wrong! He was my Daddy and I his shadow.

By way of life, I grew into my own personality. With this new person stirring inside of me, I began to change. Daddy wasn’t so funny anymore. He couldn’t fix everything with a kiss. He certainly no longer had all the right answers. But, love me he did. He made sure I did well in school. Made certain that I was in church and knew my Heavenly Father. Corrected my manners. Gave me an example to follow. Taught me the importance of money. Didn’t let it slide when I was out of line. Did his best to make me happy, no matter what was going on in my small, little world.

As I continued to grow and learn, he continued to be my teacher. At some point I remembered he was my Daddy, not some crazy old dude trying to ruin my life. Miracle of miracles, he was still there with another lesson and more love. He was there no matter how much I showed out, always the quiet hero in my life.

Life threw me some curveballs, but my sweet Jesus made sure I could handle every thing that came my way. Enter another great man into my life. As I think back to my wedding, I find it a true measure of my life that one great man “gave” me to another. I openly admit that Trace is a far better husband than I deserve.

After 5 years of sharing our lives, my husband became someone else. In a space of mere seconds he became a Daddy, even though he had been a father for 9 months. I continued to be amazed at how awesome a Daddy he is (and I would know because I had one of those great kinds of Dads).

Yes, Matthew’s Daddy did more than give his son a name; he gave him his heart. He was there for night feedings, changings, homework, skint knees, bloody lips, flipped go-carts, meltdowns, award programs, tournaments, every day life. He.Was.There! He is everything Matthew could ever hope for in a father. He’s compassionate, loving, generous, disciplinarian, involved, available, grounded, reliable; and perhaps most importantly, an example. I hope Matthew looks back on his childhood and remembers not the times he was in trouble, nor the times he didn’t get his way, and certainly not the times he pushed a little too far; but, rather understands each time his Daddy took action, it was to mold him into the man God expects him to be!

As many of you know I love digital scrapbooking! You meet some of the nicest people through this hobby, and Teresa Clifton from Teresabelle Designs is no different. Okay, so I don’t really “know, know” her, but have chatted online a few times. Anytime I’ve emailed asking about a scrap that she had posted, she gave me all the 4-11 on it, and several times just sent me the template to use as well.

I not only follow her design blog, but her family blog, Clifton Clan, as well. Teresa’s 8 year old daughter, Emma, has a story of her own. Emma must be the bravest little thing there is, since in her short life she has faced many obstacles along the way. When Emma was born, she needed open heart surgery to repair a defect. With the surgery being a success, you may think this would be the end of the story. But, sadly no. Before the family could even take a breath, Emma was diagnosed as having a fatal disease called Fanconi Anemia (FA). FA is a very rare disease and desperately needs more research to help these beautiful children live longer, as well as, have a better quality of life.

The reason I am sharing Emma’s story with you, is because her mom has issued a plea for help. She is not asking for money, just a little of your time and compassion (and I’m sure your prayers would also bring the family great comfort). There is a charity contest taking place on Facebook where you can help Emma just by voting for the FA charity. You can do that can’t you? Sure you can. We all have so much to be thankful for, oh so very much! So this really is a matter of if you can spare 10 sec to give a family you don’t even know some hope. Think of what this world would be like if Jesus wouldn’t have given of himself so unselfishly.

Happy Birthday to the love of my life, best friend and the man behind my smile and happiness. The first person I speak to in the morning (some days more grouchy than sweet nothings) and hug at the end of every day. The only reason I have this wonderful life and terrific man is because some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers! God truly does have a plan for our lives, and I have genuinely been blessed to be apart of His plan for you. I thank you for your love, respect, devotion, consideration, support and guidance for our family. It may be your birthday, but I feel as if I receive the most wonderful gift each and every day through the bond we share.

Heather does the most awesome work and I am so thankful she had time to do my family. The only drawback to this experience was I had to be in the pictures. LOL! I hate pictures with me in them. Getting fat will do that to you.

But I would love for you to see just how cute my boys are… or at least I think they are... I would get Heather to take ours every time she comes home, but just getting the guys to participate is a whole other question. Actually, I would like to have entire family pictures, which we haven’t done since 2007 on Sapelo. Guess it’s time. All babies have arrived in our family, so unless God’s sense of humor decides to knock someone in the Hill, Sands, Maund or Mobley extended families over the head {hint, hint}, we should be good in getting a family shot. Heather, you need to get me some package options and prices.

We spent Easter at Sapelo Island. We went over to get new beach pictures, but some clothes were left behind, so that was a bust. We did take a tour around the island with our tour guide, Matthew! That’s his favorite part... getting to drive. Wayne, Jane, Jessica & Megan were also over, so we did get to visit. It was quite windy on the beach, but otherwise the weather was perfect!

I got the sweetest gift and card from Matthew’s class for the little treats we have been sending for CRCT week. Wednesday Matthew decided they really, really needed pizza as an end of test celebratory lunch. Thanks to Aunt Amy’s delivery service they were able to enjoy that pizza lunch after all. Mrs. Sittle is just awesome!

I’m not really sure just how it happened, but a whole other child is living inside my son’s body. This new boy is the sweetest thing ever and is such a pleasure just to be around, much like how he was as a toddler… free with his hugs, smiles and laughs. The first day I was waiting for him to hit me up for something. The second day I was wondering what he had done and just how bad could it be. By the time the third day rolled around, I was wondering how long before the other shoe would drop and dreading the loss of my new little conversationalist. Well now, now I’m just spending every minute I can with this new little personality and trying to soak up all the love he is offering! I don’t know how long my son is going to be possessed, but I certainly am going to take advantage of the sweetness he is oozing, until the preteen monster returns.

Yeah, he thinks he’s fun-nay. When asked for a little cheese before he started gaming, this is his smartie, smart reply. But, hey, a picture opportunity none the less (camera phone and all)!

I could take such wonderful pictures as Heather… After threats and dares, Matthew and Tracy stopped acting like they were going to a funeral. I think she got some really ~~cute ones~~ handsome snaps of that little boy of mine! Will post soon!

Oh, the excitement!

Today had us going to see a dermatologist in Savannah after being referred for a spot on my leg. It has actually been there for several years, but has started changing in size and color. Dr. Yeckley certainly has his routine down, because I didn’t even have time to eavesdrop on other people’s cell phone conversations. As I waited for the doc to come in I was texting Trace in the waiting room. He texted me back to inform me that there was absolutely no cell phone usage in the patient rooms. Yeah, right, whatever. So then I thought I should take a pic of the poster on the wall for my dear friend Wanda, but just as I was trying to snap, in walks the doc. So much for being slick with my cell phone usage in the patient’s room. Anyway, I thought he was only going to look at it and schedule another appointment if he needed to do something about it. Well, after examining the area he said he was going to cut it out. Those that know me well know I about fell off the table at that point. So, he goes out and comes back with a little cart and starts telling me what he needs to do. I probably was turning white at that point. He said it wasn’t going to be all that bad. All I could think was “Oooh hell-to-the-no”! As it turns out, the worst part was the sting from the deadening shot (if you don’t count the sickening smell of burning flesh). He then told me he was going to cover it with half a Band-Aid. Say what? He then went on to say that they no longer could use a whole Band-Aid because (wait for it, wait for it) we are in a recession. Hardy har har. Then he thought it would be a good idea to show me the hunk of flesh floating in the jar. Oh, yuck. He said he didn’t think it was anything and I would only hear back from the office if there turned out to be a problem.

After that lovely experience, we headed to Outback on Bay Street. Above you can see the excitement on the guys faces as we waited. It has been a wet and soggy Spring Break for me, but as I always say, a bad day off is certainly better than a good day at work!

Girl: I sho told him.

Girl: U know, my baby daddy.

Girl: Oooh hell-to-the-no!

When I get home my own son was having a one-sided conversation because he sure wasn’t making any sense.
